How to Take a Steal at 2nd Base

Run Like a Rabbit

Third base in a 3-man system is commonly known as U3. U3 is also referred to as “The Rabbit”, as they constantly run to 2nd base from 3rd base. As U3, consider several options when there is only a runner at first base. Accordingly, the most important, be in the best position to make an accurate call on a steal play. One of the most difficult plays to call, the steal play can be bang bang. Establish your expertise here. There are two, possibly three positions to start in. Select the right one at the right time to make the right call. Develop yourself as a better umpire while making these calls.

Position 1 – Experts Only

I recommend the first position only for highly skilled and experienced umpires.  This position is on an extended 1st to 2nd baseline towards the outfield. Furthermore, the advantage of this position is that everything in the play is coming towards you. This allows you to adjust accordingly, similar to being in the wedge.

Options Two and Three

The second and third options are standing with your toes on the grass just outside the cutout at second base. Beginners in 3-man usually prefer to stand on the third base side for a full view of the play. By being here they do themselves a disservice by not being in the best position to make the call. Why? Barring a perfect throw, the runner is often on the opposite side of the fielder, and the umpire is blocked from seeing the actual tag. The only thing that this position is better for is one scenario. If R1 slides past the bag and then a tag attempt is made, it is easier to see the back side of the bag.

Instead,  position yourself on the second base side.  End up in the “wedge” automatically from this position. If the throw pushes the infielder up the first base line, take the opportunity to give way and adjust your position. Moving into the “runner’s lane” after the ball goes by allows seeing the swipe tag either touch or miss the runner. Don’t relax too soon. If the runner slides past the bag, prepare to move quickly to see who gets back to the bag first.

Make Your Choice

Take the time to consider these different options. Enjoy the opportunity to see the play better and be more confident in your call. Practice and experience will build your confidence making correct calls from this position. Basically, exposure grows you as an umpire, and is highly appreciated by everyone involved in the game.
